LOVE Stories (February 2019)

It was a day of stories, music, art and community at our ‘LOVE Stories’ event on Saturday 9 February 2019 at Petersham Town Hall. Produced by ACON’s LOVE Project, the event encouraged LGBTI seniors and their friends to come together and share their personal tales and express themselves through drawing, creative writing and performance.

Hosted by Julie McCrossin, attendees were treated to creative workshops by writer Ellen van Neervan, artist Guy James-Whitworth and song-writer Jeremy Brennan.

Thanks to LOVE Stories funders, the NSW Seniors Festival and Aurora Group.

Nicola's Story - 'A City Responds to Crisis: Volunteers and the HIV & AIDS Epidemic 1980s – 1990s' (December 2018)

A new historical exhibition, ‘A City Responds to Crisis: Volunteers and the HIV and AIDS Epidemic in Sydney, 1980s-1990s ‘ honours and celebrates the selfless contributions of volunteers and the role they played in the early years of the epidemic. Among the groups and organisations that formed to support people impacted by HIV and AIDS during this time was the Community Support Network (CSN). In this video, long-serving ACON team member Nicola Addison shares her story with CSN, caring for those in our communities, many of whom had no one else to turn to for support.

Curated by Dr Shirleene Robinson, the exhibition is on until 11 December 2019, 1-5pm weekdays and 12-2pm weekends, at M2 Gallery, 4/450 Elizabeth St Surry Hills. Sponsored by the City of Sydney and run in partnership with ACON.

Video produced and directed by Helen Ross-Browne.

Healing Historical Violence (May 2018)

ACON’s report, 'In Pursuit of Truth and Justice: Documenting Gay and Transgender Prejudice Killings in NSW in the Late 20th Century', shines a light on anti-gay and trans hate crimes that occurred in NSW from the 1970s and 1990s. It seeks to deliver justice for victims and survivors, and aid the ongoing healing process for loved ones and members of the LGBTI community who continue to be impacted today. Here's Sydney gay historian Garry Wotherspoon and former Dykes on Bikes member Nora Savona sharing their personal stories and reflections of that time.
